Every single atom of the earth holds energy within it. Ceramics has always been a grounding force within me.

I found myself moving into a meditative state as a new understanding of elementals washed over me. An alchemist. An earth bender. These *sets* of pieces, work that can be grouped, are formed together, though no one piece is identical to another. Carefully content with the fluid practice in which I create; slow crafted earth. The tender affection stays with each piece, throughout every part of the process, and those who connect with my artwork continue to feel that same energy. There is magic within these minerals.

Magic within the Minerals

From small beginnings. A humble lump of clay, that I have taken the time and loving effort to alter.. transforms into a new being. Working with both white and toasted stoneware clay, utilizing techniques of wheel throwing and hand building— the process is thoughtful and extensive. I measure out a specific weight and type of clay, depending on the piece I plan to make. It is wedged, removing any air pockets, centered on the wheel, or rolled out into a slab, moulded and formed, creating the main body. The foot is trimmed, handles and decorations are attached, and the piece is left to fully dry to the bone. Then, the collection of pieces are loaded into a kiln, to bisque fire to a temperature of 1915°F for 13 hours, transforming the fragile clay into stone. Once cool, they are washed and the bottoms are waxed, and each are dipped and hand painted in layering glaze colors. To complete the cycle, the collection is loaded back into the kiln, and fired to 2345°F for 14.5 hours, melting the glaze minerals, and forming them into a glassy surface. And voilà, magic.
